Rosa californica with hips

CALIFORNIA WILD ROSE

Rosaceae

One of the prickly delights of the Garden. In spring and early summer, the pink flowers appear in moderate profusion, either singly or in small clusters. This is one rose you do not have to baby. While it is commonly seen near waterways in our area, it is not unusual to see it in dry meadows, albeit in much reduced size. It is easily cultivated from root divisions.

R. californica is not recommended for the home garden. Our experience at the Preview Garden, where we drip irrigate, is that the rose freely sends out runners and is beginning to take over more space than is allocated. It does have good wildlife value if that is desired
