One of the California native plants that do very well in cultivation, this penstemon adds shades of blue and violet to the garden. P heterophyllus is a small perennial growing about two feet tall. Cut it back in the winter and it will produce new flowering stems the following year. Naturally occurring on dry hillsides away from the coast, it blooms from April to June
