Many years ago, when life was simpler and one could
fly a gas model airplane from your local airport, a friend of mine, Sam Hess, was going to fly his
"Comet Clipper".
Probably six weeks later we got a clue. We were in Scheel's Hardware
at 3rd Avenue and Broadway in Fargo ND, talking with a salesman when he happened to mention about a
farmer, across the Red River in Clay County MN, that had found and damaged a model plane when he was
harvesting.
Sam dug out this picture and sent to to me.
It was a nice summer day, light breeze and some clouds.
The plane had a little air timer that he set for probably 40 seconds
runtime for the engine. He started it and hand launched into the wonderful peaceful sky!
It climbed and climbed and finally the engine stopped. But instead
of gliding down to a pretty landing, it kept on climbing! It had hooked into a thermal. When it got
over a thousand feet we could no longer follow it.
We tried to find it to no avail. Boo-Hoo!
So Sam and another friend, Joe Hyland (He had a car.) drove out to
the farm, and sure enough, there it was!
