This was a bad day at Pomigliano Italy.

I was testhopping the plane. The canopy came off while pulling out of a small dive and hit me on the head. I had a mild concussion and I don't remember trying to land the airplane. I hit the runway, still gliding, bounced forty feet in the air, stalled and came down on the left wing. I "woke up" sliding across the ground.

Mt. Vesuvius is in the background.

The clocks were highly prized as were the rear view mirrors on the canopy. You can see my crewchief, Tiny Hunter from New Mexico, rescuing them from this plane. I don't think I ever had a chance to thank him for keeping me alive for 94 missions! I always thank every WWII crewchief I encounter as a tribute to him.
