Charles E. Dills and Sam Hess

This was taken in the Junior or Senior year at Central High School, Fargo ND.

Sam was a master gas model airplane builder. I was just run of the mill. But we did have one project together. We built a kayak. The frame used curved strips from a banana crate. It had stringers and was covered with canvas, then painted. We made it with a rather flat bottom so when we got into tipping matches with other kayaks down at the Red River by the dam, we never got tipped.

Sam had hay fever really bad. We would go out south of town to fly our models. After an hour or so he would be sitting on the ground with his head in his hands, barely able to see!

Another day I was flying my 6 ft 6 inch Zenith model with the Ohlsson-60 engine. We had a timer to shut off the engine in less than a minute so it wouldn't get too far away. Tne Zenith got up in the air a ways, the engine quit and it glided down over the N-S highway (US 81?) and landed in the field beyond. I went over and picked it up and carried it back on my shoulder.

As I climbed out of the ditch to cross the highway, a man got out of his car that he had just backed up about a half mile. He looked at me with surprse and said, "I thought it was real. I came back to see if anyone got hurt."
