Daniel Everard Dills
Daniel Everard Dills
This is a rather remarkable picture, particularly for the time when it was done. When Daniel died, few pictures were available. A photographer. whose name I believe was Severtson, took a small picture that Daniel had taken in Minneapolis at a drug convention and used it as the basis for this picture. The original was one of those pictures we called ping-pongs, taken in a booth on the street, four pictures for a quarter. While the increase in size is remarkable, what makes it even more remarkable is that he was wearing a hat, an overcoat and scarf! If one looks carefully you can see that little of this picture came from the original and yet it looks very real. It is easy to do this nowadays with a computer, but Mr. Severtson did this in 1930 with only his darkroom, for which, I belatedly thank him.
