Pleasant Hill Farm
of Syver Hanson, Brocket ND

Marie Hanson had five siblings, Syver, Johan Fredrick, Lena (Toline), Sophie and Anna. Syver, Johan and Lena emigrated in 1893, Sophie in 1897, Marie and Anna in 1899. Johan died in a typhoid epidemic in Grand Forks ND in 1897.

Syver married Ella Mundhjeld and they had three children, Mildred, Sunneva and Sylvester. Mildred and Sunneva went to Washington State and became teachers. Mildred never married. Sunneva married a James S. Whitney in her forties and had no children. He had children by a previous marriage. Both Mildred and Sunneva died in Pasco, Washington.
Syver had an operation in the fall in the late forties and it went badly. They lost him. Their son Sylvester had a problem. He could not make decisons. He could plow the north forty but could never realize when the north forty needed plowing. The next spring, after Syver died, he was so frustrated by not knowing what to do that he took a rifle into the barn and shot himself. Ella apparently just gave up and went to Washington State to be with her daughters. Within a year she died. Syver, Ella and Sylvester are all buried in Brocket.

This picture is of Syver's farm, "Pleasant Hill" near Brocket. He was reputed to be a good farmer. I was at this farm when I was about 4 along with my cousin Ansel and all the siblings still alive. I wll post pictures taken at that time.
