prickle "According to botanical terminology, a spine or thorn (latin: spina) is a modification of an organ (e.g., leaf, stipule, shoot, rarely of a root) while a prickle (latin: aculeus) is a projection of the outer tissue of a stem, of a root, or of a leaf. Hence in Bromeliaceae we have prickles." Walter Till
