What a wonderful blooming plant in the Volunteer Park Conservatory in Seattle!
Look at the size of it. It certainly illustrates the role of pot size in plant size. My plant was in an 8 inch pot and this one is planted in a large bed. it has been allowed to reach its proper size. Mine is so small that depauperate seems like too depauperate a word to describe it. Such a full inflorescence. Mine was just a feeble attempt.

And this, just in from Giselle, "You're right about them needing root run. When we dug up all the displays last May for the renovation, I was amazed at the root mass of the arid-growing plants compared to the rest of the bromeliads."
