Portea platysepala (Bee)

This is one of a series of photographs taken by Duncan Bee at Kew Gardens in London.

And now, a jarring note from Geoffrey Lawn.

"Dear Charles,
Your photo of so-called "Portea platysepala"----the name doesn't exist as a current taxon nor as an old synonym. Most likely it is Portea alatisepala, first described in 1992 by the botanist Philcox at Kew Gardens. There is much discussion whether it is different to Aechmea rubrolilacina, named by Elton Leme in 1993. See "Uncle Derek Says" (Item 95) on fcbs.org/ Regards, "
Geoff Lawn.

I will try to follow up on this.
